Iberostar Costa Dorada All Inclusive - Puerto Plata

Our first time at the Iberostar Hotel in Puerto Plata and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The three restaurants and the buffet offer everyone a great selection of food...Place is well maintained and the staff are very helpful...Looking forward to a return trip soon.

Overall the hotel was nice and fairly well maintained. The food was at times fantastic and at times not so great. Our initial night was New Years Eve and the main restaurant had an incredible seafood spread and pretty good wine. The rest of the week the wine was cheap and the dinner selection good but not great. The lobby bar had more than their other bars, but really quite limited and mostly low shelf liquor with the exception of rum. The ONLY beer choice throughout the hotel was draft Presidente. They did provide canned Presidente in your room. Room bars were poorly stocked . . . one to two cans of beer and a few sodas. Even upon request there was no wine or liquor. The entertainment group was absolutely Amazing! The friendly staff made the vacation pleasurable for both my daughter and I. Each morning there were many choices in activities to participate in. Everyone was very nice. Anything you need just ask one of the hotel staff workers and they are always willing to help you. One thing I was unhappy with was the hotel card key. It was awesome!! Every night there's a show and if you have kids they will be included in the show. It's really a good place for families, friends, couples, there's something for everyone! The property is well taken care of and it's super clean. You can't take food to your room from the restaurants but I think that's a good thing! Who wants ants in their bed ;-)! Pack your bug spray, sun block/tanning lotion, allergy meds, bandaids etc. because you will pay an arm and a leg for it in the gift shop if you forget! Lesson learned. I stayed at the iberostar for one week. Two days out of that week I was inconvenienced with a leaky ceiling in my bathroom. Just recently came back 8/5/12. Very dissapointing the first 2 days. Had a problem with my reservations. They wanted to charge me a higher rate. Also, they had the wrong information about the stay of one of the three rooms I had. Don't have a lot of room so I'll cut to the chase: Travelled with my wife and twin daughters. Didn't know we each had to pay $10 to get into the country. Exchange rate at the airport was horrible, hotel was much much better - but too late for me - damage done. Better to order it from your own bank before departing. It seems as though you can do everything with U.S. Dollars. In fact, they kind of perferred it. i thought the Mexican and Brazilian restaurants in the holel were excellent. Need reservations (still part of your package). Men need to wear slacks -just like a cruise. Alcohol flowed with a good beer (Presidenti) and good wine and spirits. They won't have everything - but they did have good name brands. Excursions - Waterfall/zipline/horseback riding was the best, but pricy at $120 each. Shopping trip is worth taking first. they take you to a WalMart like store used by local lets you know what you should be paying. Our third trip to the Dominican Republic, and this was an excellent quality hotel. Not 5 star by American hotel standards, but a solid 4 star here and easily a 5 star DR resort. The rooms were very clean...actually impeccably clean...on our arrival, and the maid staff did an excellent job keeping them that way. We asked for (and were given) adjoining […] rooms on the first floor in Building 7, which was very close to the pool. The pool closes at 7 pm so there is no issue of noise from the pool, which happens at some of the "adult" resorts. The air conditioning was excellent...it was 93 every day (or more) and our rooms were nice and cool. You could adjust the AC from 1 to 3 (really fan speeds) but 3 kept the room colder so it was nice to have the ability to adjust. The bathrooms were very nice...nicer than some we've seen at two other resorts and online. Faux marble and tile...neat and clean. Spacious tub/shower and decent size single sink/counter. No issues with water, plumbing, toilet. Great hot water...never an issue all week in either of our two rooms. We had five of us and were given an extra bed by the staff without even asking for it. We assumed our wo girls would share a queen bed. Mattresses were firm but we all found them quite comfortable. The pool is HUGE...and was very clean. This hotel was just OK. There are 9 separate three story building that house guests, there are no elevators. We "upgraded" to an ocean view room in the 1000 block room (closest to the beach and pool, furthest from the lobby and main buffet restaurant). There are several lights throughout the room, but no overhead lighting. It rained for our entire stay and by the end the room had a definite musty smell to it. Other All-Inclusives I've stayed at also included Liquor dispensers in the room, being that it was raining most of the time & our room was so far from the hotel lobby, this feature would have come in handy at this hotel. The food was OK, nothing amazing - preferred the buffet to the ala cart options. The pool is large so doesn't feel crowded and the water temp was warm. Chairs around the pool abundant. The beach was dirtier than expected. The resort cleaned the beach in front of the hotel, but if you walk down the beach, there was a lot of garbage washed up on shore. Review: We stayed in the hotel from 2/16 through 2/21. The hotel property was well kept. There were good variety of entertainments on the grounds (from the day-to-day activities to the evening shows). However, beach was getting a lot of sea weed. Hotel staff were cleaning it up, but on some days it was worse than on the others. Check-in was brief. […] We asked to move closer to the beach and got a room at Building 1. (Hint: buildings 1, 5 and 6 have rooms with sea view. Buildings 4 and 9 are getting noise from nearby concert stage. Beware, some of the rooms are closer to the pool (less privacy)). Rooms were old and smelly. The sea was calm, compare to Punta Cana. On the other hand, local merchants on the beach were very annoying. Food: was mediocre at all buffets. Variety was good, however it didn’t taste right. My suggestion is to skip Mexican and Brazilian restaurants and to make a reservation at Marinero. Moreover, the timing is essential in reservation (so plan ahead of time). We were able to make reservation at 8:30 pm, only. Bellboy service is almost non-existent. On the check-in nobody helped us with luggage. The same was on the way back. Mr. Unior (I apologize for misspelling his name), of the doorman service, was even mean. Overall, the service in the hotel had some ups and downs. In some areas the service was good (reception, bar, Marinero restaurant, in the others it was bad – doorman (bellboy), and two main buffets.
