Overall I was very happy with Luxury Bahia Principe Ambar. The beach and pool were wonderful - Ambar was definitely quieter and less crowded than the other sections of the resort. Very good value overall. The food and drinks were high quality although I wasn't impressed with the specialty restaurants. We booked our reservations the day we got there […] but most reservations were 8:45 or after. Don Pablo was ok - we went on our last night at 9:15 PM which was their first avaialble time. Portofino was nothing special - just a buffet for appetizers and dessert although the prok entree I got was excellent. Mikado was good but but the sushi was about the quality of what you'd get in a supermarket. The buffet was very good though and you could definitely go every day for a week without getting bored. This is one of the best values in the Caribbean. The accomidations,beech,food and staff were outstanding. We have 7 wonderful grandchildren and love them dearly but we loooovvved the Ambars adults only aspect. The golf cart rides to the other Resort areas was quick and easy but is was always nice to come home to the peace of the Ambar.

My wife and I spend 2 weeks at this hotel in December 2012..we enjoyed our time there mainly as a result of the top class service we received. This was our second time at the Ambar and the layout is superb with everything close at hand...the beach, the pool and the restaurants. I promise this is to be a complete review as I know how helpful reading them was for me. I have to say that this was an overall excellent experience. Both my bf and I stated and told management that we would be going back. Everyone was extremely friendly, food adequate and plenty, so much to choose from. This is a great spot if you definitely want some alone time and to be around only adults, but also have the luxury of being able to get to any of the 4 other resorts for different atmospheres. I loved being able to go back to the extreme seclusion where I felt like i was the only one who existed. Overall, would we go back, absolutely and we will. SOON! It was a wonderful 7 days, the only thing i would have changed would have been i wished i would have stayed longer. Wherever you went there was food, drink (we recommend the Banana Mama, Coco Loco and the champagne) I would also say that the vendors get to be a bit much at the shops, but you take it as it comes....and if you want something get it....if not say no thank you. My wife and I just returned from six days at the adults only, Gran Bahia Principe Ambar. This is a beautiful resort, that is well kept and full of friendly people. The highlights were the fantastic beach, which quickly fills up each morning with walkers, sunbathers and swimmers. The rooms were clean, roomy and mostly quiet until the staff began showing up each morning to begin work. Once the sun comes up, the resort gets busy. Don't plan on sleeping in. The food was pretty good. If you eat at the buffet every meal, you might get a little bored with the menu. But, the a la carte restaurants offer a nice change of pace. We like Don Pablos the best. The biggest problem is over eating. There are massive quantities of food available anywhere you eat. You can also ride ride the tram over to the Punta Cana or Bavaro to dine at their buffets. There are many dining options, so don't just keep showing up at the same buffet for every meal. Finally, you will need to be patient sometimes with the staff members that don't speak Egnlish that well. Most of the staff can communicate well with English, German, Russian and Frech speaking guests. This is really a very cosmopolitan resort. All the staff tries to be friendly and helpful. For those interested in going to a beautiful resort, choose Bahia Principe. The grounds for maintained very well and the resort was VERY clean. I highly recommend this resort, but make sure you don't go here because of food; not so good. Best restaurant is Don Pablo. If you can book dinner for multiple nights there, DO IT.

Room Service=They hardly ever pick up the phone. You need to dial 3-4 times befor you speak to someone. Customer Service=Some staff was very curteous while others were RUDE. Airport was close to hotel. Prearranged transport from airport to hotel was easy to find and prompt. It was just us in the transport and we didn't make any other stops. Ambar was overbooked when we got there so they "upgraded" us to the Esmeralda. This was a little bit of a run around but actually just as close to the beach and room ended up being nicer […] than the one we got the next day when we moved to the Ambar. Also got 100$ spa credit for the inconvenience which satisfied my wife and I. Staff was slightly difficult to communicate with but overall very friendly and helpful. Moved back to the Ambar on day 2 and stayed there for the rest of the trip. We were offered to stay in Esmeralda, only reason we went to Ambar was it was adult only. Ambar was still nice, room was comfortable, and close to the beach. We had no other room issues. Beach was nice and well maintained. There are constantly workers cleaning and maintaining the resort keeping it very clean and maintained. There are a lot of pools and pool/beach chairs although you typically did have to claim them early in the morning. Buffets were not bad (pretty much same food each day though). The a la carte restaurants were higher quality but it was a little difficult to make reservations (would definitely make them before your trip to get the best options. If you book through hotel it is much higher but does come with transportation both ways and a meal. Punta Blanca was OK but over priced. La Cana was absolutely beautiful we played both ocean nines and cost less than Punta Blanca. Staff was exceptional. Ambar is Adult only very quiet with a slightly older crowd. We just returned from the resort. The grounds and beach are awesome in good shape. Plenty of beach and pool chairs. The Food was the biggest issue at the resort. Gourmet is not even close to describe it. The food wasn't even up to two star hotels level. The buffet was horrible and so was the snack shop. Same food every day. You are not allowed to eat […] at other buffets on the resort which is massive. There is only the one buffet in the lobby. Consistency at the bars was not very good. If you wanted a good drink you had to walk to the lobby bar. The pool bartenders couldn't make much more than the ten drinks on the menu. Which were not very good. Bring lots of immodium ad and be prepared for a rocky week. The resort is nowhere near a 5 star resort. My wife and I had an excellent time at the Ambar! The overall Gran Bahia resort is ENORMOUS! No worries shuttles constantly run to get you to your destination. We recommend the Ambar resort for couples. The resort is very well kept. We stayed in building 66. Our room was very close to the pool and beach. Our room was great besides the broken drawer […] and cable service being out on two occassions. Now Punta Cana is very hot and humid. Bring plug in type of air fresheners or any air fresheners because the room had a musty smell do to the climate. The service is at the resort is outstanding. The downside was the food. It gets a C-. We loved Don Pablo and Bella Italia as the ala carte. The beach was superb! Impeccable! Get ethere early to grab a good spot close to water. The bar was great! Try Brugal rum a local favorite. As far as entertainment the Michael Jackson show is a must see! Book an excursion our two. Quick travel tips. Learn some Spanish!!!! It helps. Bring tip money about 100 should do for a 4 night stay. my advice would be to pay more money to try elsewhere. property looks OK, but plumbing everywhere is bad, service is inconsistent, front desk not helpful or really care. i had to fight tooth and nail to change the room as our toilet wouldn't flush. every day for 4 days they'd fix it( which i'd say they are fast to come fix things#, but 1 flush and it's […] not working again. we had to go to the lobby to use a bathroom...and what about nighttime? MAJOR inconvenience. everywhere in the area they try to scam u for money #starting with airport bell boys to jewelry, cigar and tour sellers#, sell u something overpriced or worthless, and i thought i'd be fine saying no, but they make it difficult especially if u have manners. Priviledge Club stops u in all lobbys harrassing to sign up, and we were lured into it thinking as they said we were going for the helicopter ride. DONT sign up for this Club like we did!!!! those aren't real savings and i regret it so much, i don't know why we did it, it's not like us at all, they push u and pressure u and good at lying making something out of nothing. this was a big lesson for me. towards the end of vacation #11nights# i was rude to everyone who tried to talk me into buying anything when i already said no, as i was so sick of it. We ended up skipping out on our last reservation because it wasn’t worth being on a schedule to attend it. Our other big complaint was that you could get a (terrible) house wine, but any of the “high shelf” wines ($10 a bottle or less in the US) were being sold at exorbitant prices. However – the buffets were amazing. Fresh, good food and great selection. I loved seeing the Dominican food served at every meal as an option to try. Each meal has stand-by-chefs who will custom cook burgers, steaks, eggs, etc (and do a great job). The beach / pool are great. All adults – no kids. It isn’t 20 something’s trying to hook up - it is couples hanging out and staying to themselves for the most part. The beach is the same way. This hotel was great! My only complaint was the timing the rooms were cleaned. For 2 of the 4 nights I stayed here the room was cleaned after 4pm even though we were out of the room at 8am. The bar staff by the pool and buffet by the pool were great! This hotel is perfect for couples. No loud children, music by the pool and cool people.

Hotel pool was enjoyable, but the beach had a ton of seaweed and made swimming difficult. Recommend getting drinks at the Lobby bar, they are much better there than the pool and beach bars. It was quicker to get around by walking than by waiting for the shuttles. There is no longer a piano bar, which was disappointing. The shops at the main resorts […] are cheaper than the ones at the Ambar portion (all of the shops have the same items more or less). The reservation system for a la carte restaurants was unacceptable! We emailed the concierge two weeks prior to arriving with a la carte restaurant reservation times and dates; […] however, when we arrived, these were not booked as requested. So our concierge, who was very nice, did try to accommodate our requests, but the times were still difficult because he said the restaurants were all booked. We were very surprised, then, when we arrived at Don Pablo the first night to see over half of the tables empty! And that was the scene in every restaurant. The only restaurant we thought had decent food was Maiko Japanese, so we requested a second night at this restaurant. That restaurant had no tables available (even though half were open!) so our concierge booked us in MIkado Japanese. Definitely NOT the same, and the food here was abysmal. I don't understand why a 5-star resort doesn't hire top chefs for these restaurants and bring the quality of the food up to the other 5-star resorts. We couldn't even get a good basic burger!
