It is easy to see why this resort is so highly regarded. I have stayed at many, many five star resorts but without question this was the most deserving hotel I have had the pleasure of staying in. "Best Experience Ever"
This was by far the best experience I ever had. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. They also helped me with my proposal. Everything went off without a hitch. Ended up staying a second night to enjoy the experience a little more and to relax. Didn't have to check out of the room. They kept us in the same room and had new keys waiting for […] us. The restaurant on site Amaya was amazing for breakfast and dinner. Walking around the grounds is very relaxing. You feel secluded and stress free here. If I had known about the hiking trail, I might have packed appropriately for it. All in all, you can't beat this place for a relaxing getaway. "Beautiful but lacking soul"
If you're looking for a "private estate" experience, with plenty of tennis and golf, this is your dream come true. The building itself is gorgeous, in the style of a vast European villa one might find on the shores of Lake Como, but it is relatively new and lacking the provenance and patina of the genuine article. With the exception of a room service […] order that simply never arrived (hello F&B Director?) the staff was absolute perfection in terms of polish, friendliness and service, from the valets to bellmen to restaurant servers to housekeepers. The towels and robes are the softest I've ever felt and there is clearly great attention to details. My husband and I enjoyed Chef Bradley's exquisite creations at Addison, proffered by an earnest army of choreographed servers. However, there was something lacking in the overall experience for us, which my husband eventually nailed as "soulfulness". Technically, Grand Del Mar has all the individual pieces, but no connective tissue. Because it's NOT actually on the shores of Lake Como, or any special place for that matter, but rather perched on a manicured mesa amid hills lined with shoulder-to-shoulder mansions, it feels artificially imposed on the landscape (aided by a gazillion gallons of water from far, far away) with no real character. As an insulated, balustraded country club for its residents and guests, the Del Mar succeeds across the board. But it lacks that connection to the world at large which makes a hotel truly "Grand". "No as extraordinary as advertised."
Note the location of the resort is far from the beach as we drove about 12 miles to go back to La Jolla area. The hotel itself is huge with very confusing plan as you have to walk and walk through endless corridors without clear indications to your room. Built to resemble sort of a Tuscany villa including small pools without music with poor staff service […] and mediocre food both served at the pool area and one of the restaurants I tried. Pelican Hills in LA is nicer and well appointed with more affluent clientele and better food. SO I ASKED FOR ANOTHER DRESSING AND THE GENTLEMAN GAVE ME A NEWMENS BRAND (NOT TASTING SO WELL) ANYWAY THE SERVER DID NOT CHARGE US FOR THE SALAD AND WAS VERY APOLOGETIC, HE DID MAKE AN ATTEMPT TO FIND A FRESH DRESSING FOR ME, BUT IT WAS NOT FOUND. extremely high quality across all aspects of the hotel,without ever feeling stuffy. Fantastic facilities for the kids with explorers club and equestrian centre. Hi, We stayed at the grand for 7days in a suite. The service was fantastic in everything we did during our stay. The explorers club was great for my 6 yr old.golf facility is on par or better than the top few courses in Australia. "American version of a spectacular Italian Villa"
The service and the surroundings were beyond anything I have ever experienced. They had such wonderful food, lodging, and activities. We hiked a nearby trail everyday and my child went on a lovely pony ride. The pool areas were divine, heated and family friendly. I cannot wait to go back. The resort was beautiful, and was not overcrowded. The dining options were excellent onsite, but it was easy to go downtown to La Jolla or Del Mar to experience the towns also. The location was great for what we wanted to accomplish on our vacation, and the resort so good that we could have had a great time never leaving it. It's very simple: If you want an incredible experience in a beautiful setting supported by the world's best staff, stay here. Heard about this place from sports radio giant, Jim Rome. Apparently he stays here when his horses run at Del Mar. It was everything he said it was and more. What a spectacular place! From the views to the rooms to the restaurants […] to the staff doing whatever they could to make your stay perfect, be prepared for an amazing experience. One of their restaurants is the 5-start 5-diamond Addison. Chef William Bradley and his staff provided the single best meal my wife and I ever enjoyed. Pricey? You bet, but worth every penny. We wanted to visit it again later in our stay but by that time San Diego's great restaurant scene had us feeling a *tad* overfed, to say the least. Like everything else in life, you get what you pay for, and while The Grand Del Mar is expensive, we felt we actually got MORE than our money's worth. We will absolutely stay here again.
