Castle Kona Reef , a Condominium Resort - Kailua-Kona

This condo resort is very well taken care of. The beach is not really swim friendly but we did see some beginner surfers. This is close to shopping, dining, and loads of activities. I will be going back.

To say I was disappointed with this "hotel" would be an understatement. We arrived before check-in time hoping that they'd take us, but we were turned away to wait (which is understandable, we were early) but when it actually WAS check-in time, we were informed that the room wasn't ready yet. We had to wait almost an hour for the room. The pool is locked […] from the outside, which okay, they don't want random people walking in. But it is also locked from the INSIDE. There were a few people staying in the room, which turned into a huge inconvenience when one person wanted to leave but not the others. The pull out couch's mattress was still covered with the vinyl topper, which I had NEVER seen before at any hotel, I was shocked. We requested a playpen in advance since we were traveling with a baby, and when we got to the hotel we inquired about it and were informed they "had no paperwork on that" but managed to get us one and said we were "lucky to get it." I was severely unimpressed with the manager on duty, he seemed very lazy and inattentive. And half the time, the office would have an "out to lunch" sign. When we were getting pool towels, the guy made it seem like it was such a hassle for him and gave me an annoyed look. Sorry for inconveniencing you at your job? Clean and comfortable with a great location, especially for the price. Just a five minute walk to shops and restaurants. Beautiful tide pools behind the condo and a sandy beach next door (although rough surf). Our unit was recently updated with a great view of the beach next to the condo. Located conveniently within walking distance of Kona. Rooms were clean and well setup for a cooling cross breeze. All kitchen and laundry items were present. The only major problem with the property was the front office is only open from 8:30-5, which makes any administrative task problematic.

We booked this accommodation a long time in advance. We arrived late on the first night from our flight and discovered that the apartment we had been allocated was in poor condition. We did read the reviews of the place before we booked and generally they were good. Unfortunately, we didn't realize that the apartments in the complex are privately owned […] and rented out by the agents for vacations, therefore each apartment is different and varies in its standard. The place was barely clean, the main living area carpet was dirty, the curtains did not close properly and had lots of holes in them. The sofa bed was old and worn, with hardly any stuffing left in it. The kitchen appliances and utensils were rusty. The bed did not have a proper mattress cover on it. The shower/bath lever did not work properly. Paint was peeling off the walls in places and the whole place was dark and dreary and needs a complete makeover. The member of staff who listened to our complaints was sympathetic and acted professionally, but there was no other apartment available, so we shifted to another hotel the next day. The hotel stay was quiet and well maintained by staff. The only suggestion is that the rooms need to be cleaned a little better. Over all cleanliness was great!

Upon my arrival, certain aspects of the accommodations were not as clean as expected. After reporting this to the staff, the issues were satisfactorily addressed that day. Excellent location. Five minute walk to the village center restaurants and stores. Six miles from the airport.

You can't beat this property for its great location - it's the only condo property I'm aware of that is right in town, right on the water, and includes a pool and cabana area. Some of the units are more plushly furnished than others, since they are all individually owned, but overall this property is a winner!

i was quit surprised at our oceanfront 1 bedroom suite as i had reserved a garden suite...our lanai was beautifully furnished and we enjoyed eating all of our meals outside looking out at the beautiful blue ocean and black lava rocks...the park next door was a nice open space to sunbathe with the convenience of our condo steps away. we were excited […] to find snorkeling gear in a closet of our condo and put it to good use!!! we met friendly folks who own at the Kona Reef who invited us to dinner in their home where we met other condo owners...what a nice welcome to the Big Island!!! We stayed at Castle Kona Reef for 10 days in a one bedroom condo. It was clean, very well supplied with all we needed, and in a great location. We ate many of our meals there, saving a lot of money. Full sized stove and refrigerator, along with lots of pots and pans made it easy. I only had 5 days break in between my last semester before graduation so my boyfriend and I took this time to get away from the stress. We saw Castle Kona reef on Expedia and we were curious with its features. So we decided to book this hotel and it was awesome!!! I took my boyfriend to Hawaii for the first time and he loved it. Reasonably priced. Nothing fancy, but met our needs. We were able to save money by cooking many of our meals which allowed us to splurge on activities. The B-B-Que grills were clean and easy to use. The condo suite we had was great with respect to location as we had a ocean front view and could sit out on the balcony and watch the boogie boarders, turtles and birds. The only complaint would be that the furnature and decor was very dated and the carpet should be replaced or at least deep cleaned, and the whole condo fully washed down (dirty walls, […] doors, etc). Common areas like counter-tops, fridge and bathroom were clean as was the bedding and towels. On the whole we would definitely stay at this condo complex again. The location is within walking distance of all of the shops and restaurants which was nice. Put the inside of the condo looked like it had not been cleaned for a long time. the outside of the refrigerator looked like there was food and liquids all over it. Our stay was nice but the condo we stayed in was very out dated with the furniture and there was not enough seating for the four of us to be comfortable. We had an oceanfront view which was amazing but there again not enough seating on the lanai.Our children who are adults slept on the pull out and it was very uncomfortable & the pillows were very flat […] and not enough. It was nice to have a full kitchen but the refrigerator was rusty on the outside and uneven, the ice cubes tasted funny so we couldn't use them. We did not realize when we got ready to make coffee that there was no filters for the pot.The pool was very nice and open till 10:00pm which made it nice for us, the BBQ Area was very nice also and always in use. Over all we had a very nice stay the view was amazing, I would suggest this place to anyone that is going to be out site seeing most of the day and is using it mostly for sleeping. We arrived on the Big Island just before midday so decided to spend the day out as we were too early to check in which opens at 3pm. We got back to the resort at 7pm to check in but the office is only manned until 5pm, so you only have between 3pm and 5pm to deal with a human being, after that there are instructions you must follow to obtain the key […] and get into the room. Upon doing so we found the room to be quite dirty, the floor and bathroom were very grimey and worst of all there was nobody we could report this to as the offices were closed, so we had to wait til the next morning. Reported at 8:30am the next morning and had to wait until 10am before the manager showed up who was very rude, but did eventually get the maid to clean the room - this was done by around 11am and as we weren't able to shower until after this, we ended up wasting half a day waiting for the management to get their act together. However, after that everything else was fine. The location is very good, on Alii Drive, alot of shops and restaurants within walking distance. The best part of our condo was the spectacular oceanfront view. We spent many hours on the lanai enjoying the great ocean view. The condo was clean and nicely furnished with Hawaiian themed furniture. The location was great. It was a short walk to the restaurants, shops, farmer's market. We cooked many meals in the condo and found the kitchen to be […] somewhat lacking. We had problems with the stove burners, but they were fixed the next day. The dishwasher also did not work and it was not fixed during our stay (management claimed there was nothing wrong with it). The kitchen could also use more essential items - we could only find one dish towel and one dish cloth! There was no tea kettle, which would have been very helpful. This hotel is right on the water in a beautiful location with an outstanding view. We stayed in the F units in an ocean view room and the view was spectacular. I think this alone made staying in this hotel worth it. The room was not as clean as I was expecting it to be, though it wasn't so unclean that it would have been worth changing rooms or complaining. The […] air conditioning unit was in the living room, and it was generally hot and humid while we were there, so we kept it on most of the time so that by the time we went to sleep it was cool enough to be able to do so. We stayed in ocean front room D34. Great view of the ocean. Condos are next to a park with a small beach. We generally travelled to other beaches to swim. Generally everything was in great shape except for the kitchen cabinets and dishwasher and stove which were pretty beat up. Sort walk to town. I would stay here again.

I seriously didn't expect that the hotel would be as good as it was. Individual condos that were both spacious and complete. It's a drive to the small town, but you'd need to drive everywhere you go on the island anyway. I'd definitely stay here again.

This is a condo suite. The living room faces a nice ocen landscape and has a balcony. There is a kitchen with everything one would need for cooking. If you are on a budget and want to spare money for meals, that is a good opportunity. Location was great with a view of the ocean and at the end of the downtown strip. Very nice clean room with excellent AC and convienant washer and dryer. Front desk wasnt very informative, but a guidebook and talking to locals who lived their helped us with a great family vacation. Would definetly go back again.

We stayed in a very nice condo- everything you would want was there- including snorkle gear and binoculars. The only down side was the bedroom is on the outside wall of the walk way and the early morning(6am) gardeners would be talking outside the windows.

Not sure what I was expecting. Should have read more into "a Condominium Resort". Now I know that each "room" is someone's condo that they rent out. And is maintained by the property, but decorated by the owner. Our room was GOD awful, meaning bed was uncomfortable, decor was from 1982. On the plus side the room had free wifi and a washer/dryer/full […] kitchen. Thankfully we showed up at 4:59pm, the office closes at 5pm! Lots of elderly residents. Highlight was the view.It was well worth the extra money to have ocean-view condo. We could open the door and hear and see the ocean from our suite. We could watch the sunset from lanai. Comfortable bed and very clean.It was close to shopping and great restaurants. The pool was clean and well landscaped. We would definitely recommend to friends.
