Nice hotel overall, great site with a beautiful view. Clean rooms. The pool at the top was gorgeous, but needs more chaise lounges as there are certain types who tend to "reserve" the few there are all day, morning to night, with towels and books. Friendly enough staff, but when you tell the front desk there is no hot water (the 400 bldg) she dutifully […] writes it down in a book, then the guy behind me says he has no hot water (500 bldg) and she writes that down. Half hour later, no water at all, no notice. Can't flush toilet, can't brush teeth, nothing. She dutifully writes that down as if she has no clue what is going on. Don't eat there, poor quality and very expensive. We left a day early, got fed up with lack of water and the noisy A/C which is either icebox or nothing. Beautiful setting/views but the hotel could be a 5 star hotel if the owner spent the money required to improve and upgrade the facilities and rooms. We booked in the standard rooms and were horribly disappointed in this location. Priced like a North American resort without the ammenities. The septic system did not work properly, the lights didn't work, the mechanical system was very noisy and the room was not very clean. We were told there was a restaurant at the beach level so we decided to walk […] down the very steep sidewalk to have lunch after our arrival & charge it to our room. Great location for Liberia airport. If you want nice beaches and relaxation this is great. 5 star it is not. The room was large and comfortable, and reasonably equipped, but needs a deep cleaning. We stayed in a bungalow over New Years. Yes the place is out dated and needs a face lift. It is very clean and the setting is vety very nice. Yes you can hear the people in the other "half" of the bungalow. We found the staff to be very friendly. It is located "out" so if you do not have a car your regulated to taxi, or the various bus service from […] the establishments in Playa Coco walking is not an option. Fatners on the beach serves good drinks not sure I would eat there more than one time. The pool is nice, we found the breakfast to be very good and again good service. They have a dive shop and fishing right at the resort. You can get a lot of tours out of the hotel as well which was nice. We stayed 4 days dived went on a tour. Ocotal beach resort was beautiful. We were there for 3 nights and had a wonderful time. The resort is beautiful and the cabanas are amazing. We sat on our porch everynight to drink a glass of wine and stare at the beautiful ocean view below. The upper level infinity pool has an amazing view of the sunset everynight. The private beach below is beautiful […] with black sand- so be sure to wear flip flops (very hot). The resort is on a hill- so you will get plenty of excercise walking up and down but it is worth it. The continental breakfast that was included was an excellent assortment of fruit, bread, rice, beans, plantains and a made to order egg station. Next door is the restaraunt Father Rooster that has a great atmosphere and food. You can dine right on the beach. But I recommend having a car or taking a taxi to Playa del Coco everynight. This is the closest town (less than 10 min) where all the restaraunts and nightlife is. We had to wait an hour after check-in time for our room to be cleaned and the staff didn't even apologize. We asked for a free dinner for compensation and they reluctantly gave us a free drink instead. The doors had trouble locking. 12/21-12/27/12 - We arrived to San Jose at 2 pm and started our ride to the hotel at about 4 pm. This was supposed to be a 3.5-4hr ride but it quickly became a 7 hr ride. We followed the GPS to the "address" but it doesn’t match the location of the hotel, it is actually a place that is 1.5 hrs away. The hotel has very poor signage, there were no hotel […] signs anywhere in the main road. The first sign was about 1km away from the hotel (useless). When we got to the hotel we had to get the keys from the guard because the lobby is closes at 10 pm. The key wasn’t the correct one, luckily the guard had access to the lobby and was able to get the correct key. Whenever we got to the room, we noticed that it wasn’t as the pictures show, it is lacking a lot of maintenance, simple stuff needs change (lamp shades, tile, bathtub plug), the bathroom/bathtub area wasn’t too clean, ice machine didn’t work. After a day or two we started noticing a bad small coming from outside through the bathroom window. We mentioned it to the front desk but nothing could be done, also mentioned to the cleaning lady and she did everything possible but the smell came back after 30 minutes. I have to say that the service from EVERYBODY at the hotel WAS GOOD, people was always smiling, willing to help and very polite. Our stay just wasn’t worth the amount of money that we paid to stay at the hotel; overall, not the best experience. Also there is NO way that this hotel should be rated as a 4 or even a 3 Star. Avoid the rooms near the dive shop as the owner keeps German Shepherds that bark all day and night - nothing the staff can do about it. Great bar/restaurant on the beach a couple hundred yards from the hotel - Rooster something. A great place to dive - 1st class operation.

We enjoyed this hotel, spent two nights here. We stayed here because of our awful experience at Blue River Resort and Hot Springs where we checked out early. This was a big improvement. The views from our room was incredible, best ever. The hotel room itself could have used a paint job, and its like they stopped a reno on our room without completing […] it. Walls were super thin. I'm on day 2 of my 13 night stay in bungalow 203. The setting is beautiful, I'm by my pool, each bungalow shares a pool with a neighbour. The whole ambiance is perfect, but there's so many things lacking that are totally easy, it's upsetting to see. Check in was easy, however, they ask you to sign a blank old school credit card swipe docket which has […] no amount inserted. I rang my cc co & advised them I wasnt at all comfortable with this and have been advised that this practice is actually illegal. Simple checks before someone checks in should be made, clearly not! The list of what "should" be in the bungalow isn't correct in my experience. So far, we have no blackout blinds, so 2x 5am wake ups for me, there's no wifi " in" the rooms, you have to sit outside, sitting outside by my pool greets me in total shade, there's a small plentiful patio, but the trees are so vast, I can't see the ocean, just hear it, and there's no sun. The location is perfect, right on the end of the mountain( kinda) but there's so many trees you cannot appreciate the beauty! We have 1 glass, no milk for coffee, no air con remote control, no clothes hangers and no soap, I've had to request all of these, basic things that should be checked. When you order the shuttle exect to wait, then chase it. Breakfast is in a beautiful setting, I ordered healthy breakfast which consists of under toasted bread, cereal and a fruit plate, namely 2small pieces of pineapple and watermelon!!!! Pročitajte više

I was looking forward to every chance I had to sit in the cafeteria overlooking the sea. The beach is good for snorkeling along the cliff. Great place for stargazing at the "infinity" pool. Lot's of animals at the breakfast :-)

We spent our last night in CR at the Octotal. We were given a room that they knew still smelled of smoke (a non-smoking hotel). When we complained they initially acted as if they had no idea but a worker confided to us that they had been trying to clean the room for three days. The view was beautiful. That being said, the view was sadly the only thing that was outstanding about this hotel. Our shower was always cold. The food at the resturant was ok. The Good; The view is INCREDIBLE. Every one of the staff was the best I have seen almost anywhere. The food was reasonable priced and incredible every time, but read below. The Bad; The Hotel itself while maintained has long since seen its glory days and is in need of a refurbishing. Our shower didn't drain and we always finished standing in 2 inches […] of dirty water. The remote was broke and taped together and need coaxing to work at all. The beach was several hundered feet down/up a very steep grade that would make you forget about something you left behind as you actually have to be in good shape to make the climb. This is not for the elderly. Although the food is great and dishes are priced about 13$ US average you only have 4-5 choices and they do not change. It is a 6$ cab ride each way to go to "town" where you can have a choice of restaurants and tourist shops. Overall a great experience but you will want to plan a few day expeditions, I suggest the all in one tours, zip line, horse ride and hot springs were great and about 100$ ea all inclusive door to door. Ocotal Beach Resort was a nice hotel tucked away. Only 30 minutes from Liberia airport and secluded too. The arroz con camarones (rice with shrimp) was absolutely delicious in the restaurant hotel. Definitely worth staying a few nights.

The hotel was nice, but a little old. Rooms were clean and maid service came each day. We do not care about lots of extras, as we spent most of our time on tours. Food was the same every morning and sometimes the food listed on the menu was not available at lunch or dinner. It cost $6 for the cab one way to town. We stayed at Ocotal Beach Resort for 3 nights in March 2012. The room was clean and comfortable but I was a little disappointed with the view. Our room was in a building above but behind another bullding. So a good portion of our view was the other roof. The views from all the other buildings appeared to be unobstructed, so would just recommend staying […] out of the 500 series rooms, or at least the ground floor rooms. The grounds were beautiful and the variety of pools was nice. But the access to the beach was far and away the biggest selling point for the resort. The path is steep, but walking or driving down the drive is an alternative. The beach is beautiful, and quiet. We snorkeled right off the beach. It was also nice to have use of the hotel's lounge chairs on the beach without having to "rent" them as you would on other area beaches. The service was ok, but not great. We informed the front desk after checking in that there was not a safe in our room and were told they would install one the following morning. They didn't get it installed until the day after that (our last day) by which time it was a mute point. The wait staff at the restaraunt was compitent, but not overly friendly. This hotel worked for us because we had rented a car. We could drive into Playas del Coco to shop or dine away from the hotel. What a charming resort! Fabulous views from high up over the ocean. Friendly and very hardworkign staff. We spent our first few days at the Westin Playa Conchal and then moved North to Ocotal. We stayed in a bungalow about half way up the hill and had a great view of the beach and bay. The restaurant produced very good quality meals from a modest length menu- this might be an issue if you stayed longer than 4 or 5 days. Breakfast a little repetitive but fine. You have to be in good physical shape to stay at this hotel! We grew to love the little path to get to and from the beach but it was challenging at first because of its high incline. Saw a lot of wildlife! We did not particularly like Guanacaste as much as other more lush areas of Costa Rica. It was very arid. Air conditioning in bungalow did not work well. Food was okay. Breakfast was basically the same every morning. Room was kept clean. Staff were very pleasant and helpful. The hotel does need work. The view is wonderful. I would stay again.

As with buying houses or investment property, the deciding point is always about: location, location, location.... This place has it !!! Located on the top of a hill-side / mountain next to the coast, the views are remarkable. The room was clean and nice, but don't think 5 star marble floors, gaudy... Think rustic ocean-side cabana with wood floors, […] sliding glass doors, small pools shared between two cabanas, etc. Wildlife (not local bar scene - although it may exist) abounds... Iguana on the patio, wild parakeets (dozen or more) outside in the trees in the morning, crabs (and more iguanas) on the rocky portions of the shoreline. The beach was nice (black sand from the lava rock) and uncrowded. I will mention that if the waves are similar to when we were there, then the kids will struggle. The water was crashing onto the beach with size and made it difficult to just wade in. Better when you actually swam... Meals were good and again eating on a patio overlooking the ocean made the meals all the more pleasant. I would say the food quality was as good as we had in Costa Rica, but don't expect 5 star dining. Suggestion for activities nearby: 1) you MUST walk around the cliff sides and see the water crashing against the lava created shore line. At many points the water would recede 8 to 10 feet down and then fill the ravines back up with crashing force to send water skyward. Awesome display of nature at its best. 2) Ride the waves.
