Viva Wyndham Azteca Resort - All Inclusive - Playa del Carmen

Went on a quick 5 day trip, and the hotel exceeded our expectations based on its rating. Excellent value, and had a great time. Would recommend to others who are trying to do a budget vacation and still have an awesome time

We just returned yesterday from our holiday and would definitely recommend the Viva Wyndham Azteca. The hotel is kept extremely clean, we watched the workers amazed at how thorough they were. The staff were awesome. They were pleasant and very helpful, and spoke English too. The "entertainment team" (the ones who organize activities in the day and are […] also the performers at night) are also awesome. They are friendly, fun, and always have a smile on their face despite the long hrs they work. They definitely made a difference for our teenage sons by keeping them involved in all sorts of activities. The food and drinks were plentiful, you can never go hungry or thirsty at any time of day. There was lots of variety and all was very tasty. There was not a lot of late night parties, but for us being a family it was perfect. The entertainment shows at night are worth seeing. The AC kept us awake the first night thundering and banging. We asked for a new room the next morning but were told by the gal at the desk there were none available. Talked to a manager and he had the AC fixed. He knew what was wrong with it. It was some valve that had gone bad. The AC never did work that great after the fix either. I took a girls trip with 3 of my girlfriends. We had a wonderful time at this hotel. The room was perfect as all we really did was sleep in there. The sinks were outside the bathroom which was nice when we were all trying to get dressed. The food was decent...whenever we were hungry or thirsty we went to the 24 hour bar. Do not stay here! The food was terrible! I stay at All Inclusives frequently and this has been the worst! YUCK! Some of the staff was very nice and accomodating, but overall tone was somewhat rude. Our stay at the Wyndham Azteca was very pleasant. The resort was smaller than some in the area, but that is to our preference, so we were very happy with our choice. When I say small, recognize that resorts in the area are huge, so small by comparison hardly means what one might think. In wandering through other resorts, we noticed that a number of […] them were far to opulent for our tastes. We prefer clean and comfortable with a pleasing atmosphere, and the Azteca offered that. The food in the buffet was adequate to good depending on the day's offerings and the kitchen staff did a good job of reprocessing leftovers in creative ways. We always found something to satisfy our stomaches. Having said, that after a week, one tends to start feeling a need for more variety. Make sure you make reservations to the available restaurants in the Maya and Azteca to create some variety in your menu. The restaurants, by the way, were excellent. Our meals there were delicious! The staff in general were very efficient and friendly. Empty plates are removed from tables regularly and quickly and rooms were often cleaned without our notice. Things seemed to magically get done. All in all we were very pleased and I would recommend this hotel to anyone, except perhaps those who are used to being pampered like royalty, but I suspect that type of person would never be satisfied anyway. We enjoyed the direct access to a beautiful beach and walkable distance to Playa Del Carmen either by shore or along he the sidewalk. The activities staff is better than the several AIs we have experienced. Great resort for any age. This our third stay at Viva Azteca.

We booked our room at the Viva Wyndham Azteca on the recommendation of our realtor. They stay here often. We read some of the reviews and people were complaining about food quality and all kinds of things so here's our experience: The room was small but who cares? Are you really there for the room? It was clean and it had a bed, a shower, and a toilet. […] What else do you want? The housekeeping staff did a great job keeping it clean and nice. The food was buffet food. They're cooking for 340 rooms so don't expect Filet Mignon on the buffet. The theme for the buffet cycles based on the day but there were always hamburgers, hot dogs, pizza and a salad bar. The food we had was great and there was plenty of it. The reservation restaurants were amazingly good, but you have to know how they work. The first day you get there, make your reservations and you will only get a few based on how many days you stay. We stayed for 6 days and got 2 reservations. They don't cost extra so that's why they limit you (we had Filet Mignon at the Italian restaurant). The staff was friendly and did everything they could to make our stay great. Their "animators" (the ones in charge of activities and such) even ate their meals with the guests if you wanted them too and every night they put on a show with dancing in their theatre. This was our first trip to Playa Del Carmen and we stayed at the Wyndham Azteca. The hotel was absolutely beautiful and the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Also a couple of tips: When you go to the hotel gift shop make sure you have clean bills. They will not accept money that is torn or ripped or written on. And make sure you get to the pool early and get chairs because they go really fast. I would also recommend the Jungle Mayan Tour with Alltournative!! It was the best time and the best excursion!! We did ziplining, rapelling and snorkled in the Cenotes. They also provided us with an official homemade Mayan lunch. DELICIOUS!!! We had a blast and it was amazing!!!! We went shopping into town (The Fifth Avenue) and ate at La Parrilla Restuarant. I would recommend it if you want some great mexican food. I loved the Azteca Tacos!! They were delicious. We were not sure if we would get bored at one hotel for 2 weeks--the fact that we were able to visit the "sister" hotel Viva Maya was important. When I got to my room, my phone did not work, I was really far away from the front desk, and after traveling most of day, it was a pain to walk all the way back to front desk to get it fixed. This is a place that we will visit again and again. From the minute we landed to the sad minute we had to leave we enjoyed everything about this hotel. The all inclusive was the icing on the cake.
