"Great hotel"
Good location and close to all transport. My pillows were terrible as I have neck problems. The next morning I advised front desk who were very apologetic and sent someone to my room to talk to me about what kind of pillow she can fetch for me! Great place to stay if you want to be in the heart of things, easy access to shopping, restaurants, trains, staff friendly. It would be an idea however to vary the buffet breakfast.

Staff were not as friendly and helpful as in most other hotels, I was offered no help with my 3 bags and had to manage them up to my room on my own. The room was comfortable but in need of some sprucing up, such as a fresh coat of paint (walls were quite dirty) and the carpet needed some serious cleaning! The photo of the pool was really deceiving, […] it's tiny. The breakfast was really average. I wouldn't bother with breakfast there at all. I just finished my two nights 26-28/Dec. Very disappointed about the hotel, it is totally different from the picture which shown on website, most of equipment were old, do not believe the image when you see on the website. Soundproofing is terrible, can't sleep. It was noise next door when we were sleeping. Bed is bad, can't get into sleep for a long […] time. Staff member not very friendly, staff's attitude was bad. Service was bad, when we were checking out, we were waiting in front of the counter for 30 minutes. One thing good is location is really good, convenient enough, located on Swanston street, heart of city. I'm not sure is this hotel's price cheap within this area, but i would say if you need a very convenient place for you trip, then this hotel can be considered, but if you do care about the living quality and hotel service, then probably choose another hotel would be better. "Fantastic for a business trip"
I stayed there last Saturday for one night. Arrived at 10am and could do an early check-in. Room (9th floor) was large, clean and quiet. Will stay there again.
"Overpriced, Overrated, Location Only Saving Grace!"
Extremely disappointed. For the rate charged versus the photos shown when I booked, it was chalk and cheese. Perhaps there are renovations going on and I got an un-renovated floor? Regardless, after a 15 hour flight from Los Angeles to Melbourne, this was a real let down to come 'home' to. It's only saving grace was that being in the CBD it was close […] to where I needed to be for business that afternoon. I found every excuse not to return to the hotel until sleep forced my hand. "Dont bother staying here - its drreadful"
I had to change rooms twice due to a broken airconditioner, and the smell and dirtyness of the rooms. The bathrooms are old and tired with paint peeling off the bathtubs, mould in the corners and just a general tired and worn look to the place. My carpet has stains all over it and the towels in the bathroom are grey. The hotel has pokie machines which […] attract a particular type of person to the premises - you think they could invest some money into the general upkeep of the hotel with some of this money. The windows are grubby as well which doesnt add to the dreadful view of dumpsters in alleyways. I will most definately not be staying here again. "A fair return on comfort for the price paid"
Stayed in a standard room. Basic simple comforts. You'd have to ask for face & hand towels and bed slippers, as these are not standard. In fact I was told that bed slippers are provided only for the executive rooms. I was happy to be favoured with one! Newspapers are not standard either. Other than that, I had a pleasant & reasonably comfortable stay. […] I was especially pleased with the quality of housekeeping. The hotel corridors are narrow, its lobby is rather sparse. The concierge desk was mostly un-manned and the reception counter tended to be under-manned. I'd to queue whenever I wanted assistance. It helped that the service attitude of the counter staff were generally good. The f&b outlets are failry average.The gym and swimming pool adequate. Overall, a fair return on comfort for the price paid. Location-wise, good with close reach to Chinatown and shopping centres. I enjoyed the pleasant walks to Federation Square, Victoria Market and Crown Entertainment Centre, which are a few blocks away from the hotel. Overall the location of the hotel is the best aspect. It is on one of the main streets of Melbourne, and is close to restaurants, shops, car rentals, trams etc. The room is furnished with a modern feel, but most of the actual building is not. With a great location and reasonable price, the Swanston is an option for those not wanting to pay top whack for a central hotel in Melbourne. However, the rooms could do with a refurb, with tatty carpets and poor quality wardrobes. There's nothing wrong with the beds though - big and comfortable. The Swanston Hotel in central Melbourne was exactly what we wanted. It was the perfect location and there was plenty of space in the room. It is difficult finding somewhere central for 3 people when the third is a teenager and a rollaway is not really appropriate. By booking the 2x double bed (which were really queen) room our problems were solved. […] If we exclude the grumpy reception we received when we booked in, it can be said that the staff were polite and friendly. The rate was certainly great value as our stay was during the ACT school holidays which was term time in Victoria. This was a great opportunity for an economic family holiday. My wife and I checked in very late one evening and the type of room we reserved was not available. The next day they upgraded our room, sent a bottle of wine and moved our belongings as we toured the city. The staff could not have been more helpful. This hotel is very well located and does a very comfortable breakfast in the hotel bar. However, when I tried to have an evening drink in the bar it was shut when I arrived just after 10pm. However we noted this time that our bathroom presented very tired and was in need of restoration. We were very happy at the Swanston. The night before, we stayed at a very expensive hotel, just two blocks up the street, and frankly, I liked the Swanston better. The location was convenient to everywhere. The room was a good size and we didn't have to pay extra for the third person (which we did at the other hotel). The staff was helpful and on the […] last day we were able to store our luggage with them after check out. There were restaurants in all price ranges all around the hotel, however, we did not eat at the hotel's restaurant, so we are unable to give a review of that. The walls were relatively thin, so we could hear the TV playing in the next bedroom. However, this did not bother us, because it was very quiet during sleeping hours. The only thing that bothered us was that we had to purchase Internet time. I think it was 28 dollars for 24 hours, which I thought was expensive. Well, we really enjoyed ourselves at the Swanston. The only fault I could find with this hotel is that the walls are a bit thin. We had quite loud neighbours and we had to knock on the wall to ask them to quiet down, which they did, luckily. Otherwise, the room was clean, big enough and the service polite and helpful.
