Amazing staff. Best service ever. Everyone is so helpful with everything to do with visiting Kolkata and travelling in and out of Kolkata, not to mention throughout the hotel. The grand old hotel style is magnificent - a peaceful retreat in the middle of Kokata.

Had an excellent stay here, particularly as the hotel is well located near Park Street (restaurants) and most major sights. The hotel restaurant had superb food. The staff were unfailingly helpful. The room was spacious and exceptionally comfortable. Hotel staff were extraordinarily attentive to all guest needs. The meeting service at the airport was extremely helpful, on both arrival and departure. The location is perfect for anything one wishes to do in central Kolkata.

This is by far the best hotel one can stay in Kolkata. It lived up to and beyond its name and reputation. We arrived at the hotel at mid-night, even then the reception desk staff took time to walk us through the hotel and made sure we became familiar with the services offered at the hotel. I chose this hotel because it is ridiculously luxurious. It lived up to my expectations. The personal touch to everything from dining to spa treatments was great. The hotel in general and our room in particular were beautiful with great maintenance and ambiance However, our stay did not get off to a great start. We had booked the room at a rate that the Hotels.com site said included breakfast. However, on check-in the staff said breakfast was not part of the plan. We requested them to double check and they did […] so, only to reiterate that breakfast was not included. Naturally, we were not amused. An hour later, we got another call from the desk to say that there had been a "miscommunication" and that breakfast was actually included ! Needless to say, while the breakfast spread was excellent, we didn't quite enjoy it Am still not certain whether the error was at the hotel's end or the Hotels.com. We had booked two rooms at the Oberoi Grand for a one night stay on a family vacation enroute Bhutan. The hotel rooms would have been excellent in the 1980s, but currently look dated. The carpets are clean, but show age and stains. The bathrooms are small and the fittings pretty archaic. From the bath tub, if you happen to see near the WC, the white […] cement and patchwork are clearly visible - not the prettiest of sights. Especially after staying at other modern hotels. Our rooms faced into a characterless inner courtyard which was pretty dull & depressing on a cloudy rainy day!! At the breakfast, best to avoid the South Indian dosa. Other food was excellent with a good spread. I have earlier stayed at the other BIG hotel of Kolkata, and would tend to stay there in future rather than at the Oberoi. Having laid out the negatives, I must mention that the furniture is good, linen excellent, reception very cordial, service top notch, the lobby has the old world charm. The positives: - Staff is very pleasant, proper and as they have a "no individual tips" hotel policy, no need to be looking for change often. Tips are given on check out... - Restaurant/Breakfast were nice, specially service. - Pool was perfect. Temperature, staff services, food. I had not brought sunglasses, they provided me one. I needed gogles, they […] provided me one. The only thing was that at times, there were 6 servers looking at us at same time... I guess a bit too much attention... -Room was OK , wood floors but nothing extraordinary... This hotel had some shortcomings: -At check in, we received a welcoming letter "giving us free, complimentary breakfast" , but our rate already included paid breakfast... -Bathroom was dated, had plastic/cloth shower courtins, bathtub(combined with shower) needed to be bleached or better cleaned... -They only give 2 bath towels ... With the heat, more is definitely needed... -Toiletries are also limitted.... In quantity, refilling and variety. -Despite getting the departure car with hotel staff (not a hotel car but arranged by hotel staff), the driver changed the agreed amount (4x as much...)... Upon arrival we were tired, hungry and hot. We wanted nothing more than the privacy of our own room. But front desk clerk "Suzanna" sat us down and without welcoming us, tried to up-sell us to a 'garden view' room for an extra RS per/night. She would brook no refusal and marched us to the 'garden view' room. I refused the offer despite her pressure […] sales and we were eventually led to our original 'city view' room that was more than adequate. When I commented that there was only one bathrobe available, she curtly responded that I was making an 'issue' of the matter. I had to ask three time for a second bathrobe before it was brought to our room. Outside the hotel, armed guards stand sentry against terrorist attacks. This was a very poor first impression for a 5 Star hotel. Otherwise the rest of the stay was acceptable once you get used to the obsequiousness of the service - often three wait staff come to you asking the same question of your order. At breakfast it takes multiple requests before coffee arrives and similar number of requests for cream (rather than milk) before anyone brings it. Once again not the service I am used to in a 5 Star.
